- What's in Boobie Brekkie Toasted Muesli?
Although we are not revealing our recipe and baking processes for our foods, we are aware that as a breastfeeding mother you care about your own diet and what nutrients you will be passing through your milk to your baby. Also, because individuals may be affected by various foods if there is a history of allergies, we want to share what’s in our foods, so you can decide if they are appropriate for you or somebody you care about. If you need more specific nutritional information, please email hello@boobiebikkies.com.au.
As a nourishing snack, an analysis (Victoria University, Melbourne 2020), found that our Boobie Foods can be a helpful nutritional complement to a healthy balanced diet. Boobie Bikkies supply Folate (8% RDI), Iron (8.7% RDI in a single gluten free biscuit), Magnesium (10.7% RDI per biscuit) and Phosphorous (7.6% RDI). Based on a recommended serving of two biscuits a day, Boobie Bikkies meet the RDI for Thiamine(B1) and Niacin(B2). Our Gluten free bikkies are a good source of Vitamin E (9.2mg in two biscuits, with the RDI stated as 10mg per day) and our Orange and Vanilla Boobie Bikkies are a good source of Folate. Vitamin E is particularly high in our Gluten Free biscuits (9.2mg in two biscuits, with the RDI stated as 10mg per day).
Because we know that everything mothers eat will be passed to their baby through breast milk, Boobie Bikkies® are made from natural and organic ingredients with no preservatives, additives or ‘unhelpful’ foods such as chocolate (which may cause unsettled behaviour) that can pass through your milk. Breastfeeding burns 500 or more calories a day!! Breastfeeding mums can get very hungry!
Tip: Make up a ‘feeding basket’ with some Boobie Bikkies® and a water bottle along with your phone, earphones (to listen to a podcast or audiobook), TV remote and perhaps a book (If you have mastered feeding with one hand), so you can nourish yourself as you feed your baby. Individually wrapped Boobie Bikkies® make a great midnight snack too!
What's in our Boobie Bikkies?
Our ‘traditional’ Boobie Bikkies® are made with organic oats, wholemeal flour, raw sugar, free range eggs, organic flaxseed, Brewer’s Yeast, sunflower oil and butter.
Note: although dairy protein can cause some babies to become unsettled, butter is fat rather than protein, so unless there is a family history of dairy allergies, butter is usually not a problem and, unlike margarine, does not contain any artificial additives. However, if you have concerns that your baby may be sensitive, check out our Gluten and Dairy free Boobie Bikkies® lactation cookies.
Ingredients Include:
Organic Oats
Organic Oats - contain saponins, which are sweet, soap-like substances that have immune-stimulating and antibiotic effects. The body can use saponins as precursors to the production of hormones, including the pituitary hormones that stimulate lactation. Beta-glucan, a protein in oats, whole wheat and barley, has been found to stimulate prolactin secretion and so raise prolactin levels in the blood with positive effects on milk production. (Jacobson, 2007; Sepehri, Renard & Houdebine 1990).
Butter
A natural food, butter can be a healthy part of your diet. It’s a rich source of carotene which converts to vitamin A and also contains vitamins D, E and bone building Calcium. Although butter is derived from dairy milk, it is fat, rather than protein, so is usually safe for mothers with dairy protein sensitive infants to consume without any reactions from your baby.
Wholemeal Flour
Whole grains offer a “complete package” of health benefits, unlike refined grains, which are stripped of valuable nutrients in the refining process. Eating whole instead of refined grains substantially lowers total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or bad) cholesterol, triglycerides, and insulin levels and supplies fibre and B vitamins, particularly thiamine which is important for energy production and metabolism, so important to reduce tiredness and fatigue in a breastfeeding mother.
Free Range Eggs
A nutrient rich, natural, whole food, eggs are a source of high quality protein. The World Health Organization (WHO) uses neggs as their reference standard for evaluating the protein quality in all other foods. Egg protein is usually referred to as "HBV"(High Biological Value) protein, scoring 100% on the HBV chart. All B vitamins are found in eggs, including vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, choline, biotin, and folic acid as well as essential fatty acids, especially omega 3 fats (important for healthy nervous systems in you and your baby), Vitamins A, D, E, and K, calcium, iron, zinc. They are also an excellent source of certain minerals that can sometimes be difficult to obtain from other foods such as selenium and iodine.
Sunflower Oil
As one of nature’s most nutritious foods, sunflower seeds are packed full of healthy unsaturated oils: Golden, light and healthy, sunflower oil is naturally extracted from sunflower seed. It is cholesterol-free, loaded with Vitamin A and E which have an antioxidant effect, and is rich in polyunsaturated omega 3 and 6 fats.
Brewer's Yeast
Rich in B group vitamins, minerals, folic acid and protein, Brewers' Yeast is also a rich source of chromium – an essential part of glucose tolerance factor (GTF). Chromium is needed for the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism and insulin function. Niacin (vitamin B3) is also an integral part of GTF and is present in Brewers' Yeast.e
Flaxseed Meal
Called the ‘new wonder food’ by WebMD, Flaxseed is rich in vitamins and minerals and essential fatty acids, particularly Omega 3. These essential fats are heart healthy and will nourish your nervous system – low levels have been associated with depression. They will also have positive effects on your baby’s nervous system and may have beneficial effects on infant sleep patterns. Flaxseed is also rich in lignans (which include plant estrogen), and fibre.
Vanilla
Studies have shown that babies suckle longer and obtain more milk when breast milk is vanilla flavoured. The flavour of your breastmilk changes depending on the foods and spices that you eat. So because your baby may suckle longer, more effective breast emptying will stimulate increased milk production because we know that breastmilk works on a supply and demand basis (the more milk is removed, the more this increases milk production). And in addition to all of that, Vanilla is just such a delicious flavour, making it a super yum treat for you.
Natural Orange Flavour
The delicate subtle citrus notes of natural orange essential oil provides a beautiful aroma and a light flavour to your Orange & Cinnamon Boobie Bikkies making them super moreish to eat.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is a spice that is commonly used in Brazil and Peru in foods to promote lactation and babies are reputed to like the taste so this may contribute to more effective breast emptying and subsequent impact on milk supply. We have ensured that the cinnamon flavour in our Orange and Cinnamon Boobie Bikkies is gorgeous but subtle (you may be caught smelling your bikkies while you eat because it is just so good!).

What’s in our Gluten, Dairy and Soy Free Boobie Bikkies®?
Due to popular demand and wonderful feedback from breastfeeding mums about our ‘traditional’ Boobie Bikkies®, we carefully researched and sourced the finest and safest natural and organic ingredients to bring you our Coconut, Date & Seed Boobie Bikkies® which are Gluten, Dairy and Soy Free . These are a nourishing snack for breastfeeding mothers if they and/or their babies have allergies or sensitivities to dairy products or gluten. These bikkies are also Halal friendly (not certified).
Ingredients Include:
Gluten Free Plain Flour
Our gluten free flour is a nutritious mix of Maize, Tapioca and Rice flours:
- Maize is high in fiber and a good source of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, plant compounds that act as antioxidants. It’s also high in vitamin B6, thiamine, manganese, magnesium and the antioxidant selenium.
- Brown rice flour is high in protein and fibre and is also rich in iron, B vitamins, magnesium and manganese, as well as plant compounds called lignans.
- The resistant starch content in Tapioca flour functions like fibre. Resistant to digestion, this starch is linked to improved insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar levels, reduced appetite and other digestive benefits.
Organic Quinoa Flakes
This grain-like seed (it’s not a grain), once revered by the Incas as ‘Chisaya mama’ (the mother of all grains) is now being touted as a super food by celebrity trainers. Quinoa, a complete protein, containing all eight essential amino acids is rich in vitamin E, selenium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron, folate and riboflavin. It also has prebiotic properties to feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut and, being easily digested, your body can readily access the vitamins and minerals in quinoa. Like oats, but gluten free, quinoa also contains saponins which the body can use as precursors to the production of hormones, including the pituitary hormones that stimulate lactation.
Organic Coconut Butter/Coconut Oil
Lactogenic and a source of instant energy without insulin spikes, coconut/ coconut oil contains healthy, healing, medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) and, like human breast milk, is rich in lauric acid, a powerful anti-microbial fatty acid that protects the immune system of the foetus and newborn. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown that lactating mothers who eat coconut oil and other coconut products, have significantly increased levels of lauric acid and capric acid in their breast milk. (Francois CA, Connor SL, Wander RC, Connor WE. Acute effects of dietary fatty acids on the fatty acids of human milk. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1998;67:301-308).
Grated & Dessicated Coconut

They are also an excellent source of certain minerals that can sometimes be difficult to obtain from other foods such as selenium and iodine.
Dates
A rich source of dietary fibre, dates are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals including iron, potassium, calcium, manganese, copper, magnesium; B-complex vitamins- pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), niacin, pantothenic acid, and riboflavin - as well as vitamin K.
Sesame Seeds
Tiny, crunchy, nutty sesame seeds are loaded with essential minerals such as manganese, copper, iron, phosphorus, calcium and zinc (which promotes bone health and prevents osteoporosis later in life). Among all the nuts and seeds commonly eaten across the world, sesame seeds have been found to contain the highest amount of phytosterols (good for lowering cholesterol). Sesame Seeds also contain an abundance of Vitamin E which contributes to cell protection from free radical damage. Vitamin E is present in particularly high levels in our Coconut, Date & Seed (GF/DF) Boobie Bikkies (each biscuit providing 4.6 mg). The majority of this (83%) is derived from the inclusion of sesame seeds in our recipe. These biscuits, if taken as per the suggested serving of 2 biscuits per day, would provide 9.2 mg of Vitamin E daily (this is more than half the recommend daily intake).
Pumpkin Seeds (Pepitas)
With a wide variety of nutrients ranging from magnesium and manganese to copper, protein and zinc, pumpkin seeds are nutritional powerhouses. They also contain plant compounds known as phytosterols (known to reduce bad cholesterol) and free-radical scavenging antioxidants, which can give your health an added boost. Pumpkin seeds, are an excellent source of plant-based omega-3s, as well as a rich source of tryptophan, an amino acid (protein building block) that your body converts into serotonin, which in turn is converted into melatonin, the ‘sleep hormone.’ Breast-milk is a rich source of tryptophan which supports the development of serotonin receptors in your baby’s gut, so it’s an important nutrient for breastfeeding mothers.
Sunflower Seeds
One of nature’s most nutritious foods, packed full of healthy unsaturated oils, protein and fibre, sunflower seeds are an excellent source of B vitamins, particularly niacin and folate, and contain magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and zinc with smaller amounts of iron and calcium.
